Michael Walsh has been appointed in the joint role of Chief Executive and Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the recently established eHealth NSW.

Walsh has been acting as the Chief Executive of HealthShare NSW while a replacement was sought for Mike Rillstone. Previous to that he was the Director-General of Queensland Health where he was tasked with the payroll remediation project following the disastrous roll-out in 2010.

The new NSW eHealth body was announced in NSW Health’s five year roadmap launched by Health Minister Jillian Skinner in December 2013 and will oversee the strategic direction of eHealth across the State.

Skinner told eHealth Space that $1.5 billion had been earmarked by the NSW Government for eHealth in the next decade. A $400 million commitment has been made to the body over the next three years.

Speaking to eHealth Space, Walsh said his experience has led him "to the view that leadership and execution of large scale ehealth programs must be driven with passion and vision, a good understanding of the health business and a strong knowledge of the infrastructure and architecture that underpins ICT.”

NSW eHealth will be formally launched on 1 July 2014, however, Walsh has already started work recruiting for a Chief Clinical Information Officer.
