AEC drops $30m on electoral system upgrades The Australian Electoral Commission is enhancing its electoral management services, dishing out $30 million in contracts, to prepare for the 2025 Federal Election and manage security risks. The May 2022 election will rely on the 30-year-old system currently in place. Epicon IT Solutions will receive $20.3 million to provide management services, and Accenture will get $10 million for foundational capabilities, including system and enterprise integration.

VIC Budget 2022-2023 Victoria delivered the 2022-2023 State Budget on 3 May, featuring several new ICT and digital initiatives, including:

$104 million to upgrade school software;

$36 million to support the State Control Centre’s 24-hour operations capability, workforce delivery, data analytics and digital infrastructure, and;

$4.5 million for the ‘300 Digital Jobs for Manufacturing’ internship program.

NSW Audit finds COPS insufficient An audit of the NSW Police Force’s domestic violence prevention capabilities has found that the agency’s 27-year-old Core Operational Policing System (COPS) harms incident reporting, forcing officers to search for repeat offenders manually. The agency is developing the Integrated Policing Operational System (IPOS) to replace COPS. The audit recommends that the new system introduces automated alerts to identify high-risk individuals.

Dominello announces upcoming digital products The NSW Government is developing a digital wallet and an e-regulation platform. The upcoming programs were announced by Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello at the Future.NSW event on 2 May, where he flagged digital identity as his ‘number one priority’. The digital wallet will use a phone application to store passes, permits and identity cards to share digitally with third parties. It will also allow users to instantly update expiring cards. The e-regulation platform will cut back on red tape for businesses dealing with state regulatory bodies. It will also regulate ethical supply chains.

Datacom & Health celebrate 10th anniversary A new three-year agreement for ‘IT Infrastructure and Support Services’ between Datacom and the Department of Health brings the tenure of the partnership to a decade. The arrangement will extend services currently provided under a contract valued at over $506 million. The new agreement will come into effect when the current service deal expires in June 2022.

NT Health’s $5m software overhaul NT Health has signed an agreement with Australian healthcare informatics company Alcidion to upgrade to the current Miya Precision platform. Alcidion will receive $5 million over five years for the work, which includes support for remote ‘satellite’ clinics. This upgrade will be integrated with NT Health’s Acacia Electronic Medical Record.

NSW launches 20-year research roadmap The Office of the NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer has released a 20-year roadmap for the state’s research and development capabilities. The Roadmap features action plans to grow and leverage the state’s innovation capabilities. It identifies several digital ‘areas of interest’ earmarked for ongoing government support, including software, AI, blockchain, IoT and robotics.
- VIC innovation hub finally underway The Victorian Government has just begun work on its $180 million innovation precinct, announced in last year’s State Budget. The Government hopes the precinct will become a ‘world-renowned centre for innovation’ by 2051, creating up to 30,000 jobs.
