Department of Home Affairs Secretary Mike Pezzullo has criticised foreign cloud providers as “the most vested, self-interested, and indeed loudest complainants” and specifically singled out Amazon Web Services in recent Senate Estimates hearings.

Pezzullo was answering questions on proposed amendments to the draft of the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act (known as the SOCI bills). The amendments were introduced in December 2020, by the then-Home Affairs Minister, Peter Dutton.

In September 2021, the bipartisan Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security (PJCIS) recommended splitting the bills. It suggested proceeding with only the most urgent elements, while leaving other matters for further consultations with affected sectors.
