Release of Defence policy aimed at sustainable industry

The Government's Defence and Industry Policy Statement was released on 1 March 2007. It outlines the Government's priorities and initiatives for ensuring a sustainable in-country defence industry able to support the Australian Defence Forces.

The Policy Statement follows a review of defence industry policy launched by the Minister in May 2006. The review involved consultation with industry and government stakeholders, including a series of round tables. Almost a hundred submissions were received from industry stakeholders in response to the public release of a discussion paper a draft policy statement on 7 December 2006.

Amongst the key points of the policy:

  • Strategy to monitor the health and sustainability of priority local industry capabilities
  • Policy to make Defence procurement more commercial and competitive
  • Initiatives aimed at improving access to Defence business by Australian suppliers, including SMEs.
