WA targets Space and Cyber industries

WA premier Mark McGowan has announced a new economic development fund to bring new industries to the west. The state is promoting economic diversification through its $100 million Investment Attraction and New Industries Fund (IANIF).

The pre-Budget announcement includes $16.7 million over four years for grants to attract new industries, including battery manufacturing and cyber security.

The state has also allocated an additional $4 million over four years to fund three staff to support the development of the space industry.

A small satellite Developed by Curtin University researchers in WA was recently launched into orbit aboard Elon Musk’s SpaceX Dragon . The Binar-1 satellite, a device “not much bigger than a vegemite sandwich”, was on board the spacecraft when it launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida on Sunday, 29 August (Perth time). Astronauts at the International Space Station will release the satellite into low-Earth orbit.

Western Australia cabinet ministers are busy making pre-Budget funding announcements ahead of the state Budget on Thursday 9 September, including  revenue allocations for road upgrades, fixing Black Spots, heritage, tourism, and public housing.
